The USD 256 board of education meetings are held the 2nd Monday of each month in the school district office located at 128 West Oak Street. The meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and are open to the public to attend. If you are interested in addressing the board at one of their regular meetings you need to complete a request to address the board prior to the meeting.

The board agenda is sent to the Iola register prior to the Monday meeting or can be picked up at the school district office by the Thursday prior to the meeting.

The board of education is composed of seven school board members, each serving a four year term. The district is composed of six board member districts and one at-large member. To be eligible you must be 18, reside in the member district (unless an at-large candidate) and be a registered voter � and willing to serve as a volunteer citizen. Board member filing deadlines are in January of odd number years (2009, 2011, 2013�), the primary is in March (if there are three or more candidates for that member district) and the general election is in April. If you are interested in serving as a board of education member contact the school district office for further information Board member terms begin July 1. Only registered voters residing in that board member�s district are eligible to vote in the primary and general. Each July is the organizational meeting where board officers are elected as well as establishing other operational decisions for the upcoming school term. Present board members are as follows:

  • Brenda Swanson, Member

Sherry Henry is appointed by the board and serves as the board clerk.
